The National Emergency Phone Number in Australia (free call) 000

It is common sense to take a few issues into consideration to prevent any unwanted situations from occurring.

Use the same initiatives you would use in your home country and be aware of the following risks while Backpacking in Australia.

There is a variety of different snake species in Australia, and while many of them are not venomous there are a certain few which you will need to steer clear of.

Snakes are not going to bite some one just because it wanted to, there is no way a snake will be capable of eating a human so it has no purpose to kill a human other then in self defence. A snake will bite if it is fearful, the most common causes for snake bites are if a human has cornered them, stepped on them or tried to catch, poke or touch them. If you respect them they will respect you.

If you see a snake where ever you may be you must stand perfectly still, the snake will go away as soon as it senses you. Try not to sneak up on a snake, wear enclosed strong shoe's when walking in long grass and make some noise. Alot of Australians are known for clapping their hands whilst walking through long grass to scare off any snakes.

If you are bitten by a snake you may experience symptoms of nausea, vomiting, sweating, abdominal pain, head ache, diarrhoea, drowsiness, chest pain and double vision.

It is important not to panic one you have been bitten, you will need to apply a pressure bandage straight away and immobilise the limb with a splint. It is important not to elevate the limb and keep the victim as still as possible as activity will spread the venom quicker. You will need to get medical assistance immediately it is ideal to get a bite treated within the first 8 hours.

If possible try and get an accurate description of the snake, to help identify the type of snake that bit you and what sort of anti venom will be required. How ever do not try and catch the snake as this could result in more casualties.

Snakes are majestic creatures who should be respected at all times, in unfortunate circumstances they may act out and bite it must be remembered this is not the snakes fault they are a wild animal and can be unpredictable.
