Overview

Since the 1920s, Box Hill Institute of TAFE has, under varying names, provided education and vocational training to the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Today it is one of the premier suppliers for secondary and tertiary education in the area servicing some 35.000 student each year.

Through its accredited extended campus, Box Hill College Kuwait in Abu Halifa, Kuwait, the TAFE can also offer some international study experiences to its clients. The Institute has won numerous awards throughout its history, most recently it has been announced Victoria's No. 1 TAFE Institute in 2004 and 2005.

Location

The TAFE is situated in the suburb of Box Hill in the eastern part of Melbourne. This location makes all the comforts of the metropolitan area easily accessible. The bustling nightlife of the city, with spots like St. Kilda, affordable cuisine in Chinatown, spectacular museums and excellent shopping can be reached using the public transport system.

On the other hand there are always quite get-aways, should the busyness of the city become to tiring. The Dandenong Ranges National Park is only a few kilometres away, as is Kingslake National Park.
While it rarely gets too hot during the summers, wintertime in Victoria can be rather chilly, with ample rainfall.

Campuses

Box Hill Institute of TAFE offers three campuses in the suburb that gives the Institute its name. These are:

  • Elgar
  • Nelson
  • Whitehorse

In addition to that, the TAFE features an accredited extended campus overseas

Box Hill College Kuwait in Abu Halifa, Kuwait

Of these Elgar Campus functions as the administrative centre of the Institute. Situated in the buildings of the former Box Hill Gasworks, a number of modern facilities are offered to the students. Aside from general equipment such as computer laboratories, libraries and conference rooms, the campus houses the Centre for Hospitality and Tourism as well as the Centre for Building and Furniture Studies just to name a few. A fully operational restaurant, run by students, is also available.

Though smaller, the other two locations offer comparable amenities and special facilities, such as the Centre for Electrical and Refrigeration Trades on Nelson Campus.
